Ranking the 10 greatest New York Mets of all time

5. Darryl Strawberry, OF (1983-90)

Strawberry sparked controversy both during his playing career and after it, but his talent on the diamond was undeniable and was on full display while beginning his MLB career in New York. Strawberry quickly emerged as an eight-time All-Star, with seven appearances coming as a member of the Mets from 1984-90. Perhaps the best season of the 1983 NL Rookie of the Year’s career came in 1988 when he led the National League with 39 home runs and a .911 OPS. He also played an integral role in the Mets winning their second World Series title in 1986, hitting three home runs that postseason. Strawberry had his No. 18 retired by the Mets in 2024 and is a member of the franchise’s Hall of Fame. He ranks in the top 10 in franchise history in hits, RBIs, runs, stolen bases and OPS, and remains the Mets’ all-time home runs leader.
