Top 10 college football QBs returning for 2025 season
2. John Mateer, Oklahoma
Mateer was arguably the most notable player to enter the transfer portal in recent weeks and he may have landed in the perfect situation at Oklahoma. The Sooners’ pass offense struggled in 2024 as Jackson Arnold didn’t live up to the hype while true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. didn’t fare much better. Meanwhile, Washington State’s passing attack thrived behind Mateer who threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns while completing 64.6% of his passes. Mateer’s legs also set him apart from many on this list as he ran for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns. A lot of Mateer’s success can be credited to Ben Arbuckle who is now the offensive coordinator in Norman. That gives the 6-foot-1, 220-pound quarterback a high ceiling heading into next season and he could help Oklahoma become a darkhorse contender in the SEC.
