Ranking SEC teams with best College Football Playoff chances
4. Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee is far from a playoff guarantee but the one-loss Volunteers have a great chance with what’s ahead. The Vols get home games with Kentucky, Mississippi State and UTEP down the stretch. They do have to face Georgia in Athens in mid-November, and closing the season at Vanderbilt isn’t an easy test. However, winning one of those road games would likely lock them into the bracket, particularly if they beat the Bulldogs.Â
Tennessee already has a strong resume, beating three ranked opponents, including Alabama. Freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava has had ups and downs, but the Vols’ offense still ranks eighth in the country in part thanks to star halfback Dylan Sampson. The biggest strength for Josh Heupel this year though is the defense which ranks third in the nation and has given up just eight offensive touchdowns all season.
