Top 10 Virginia Cavaliers football players of all time
4. Jim Dombrowski, OT (1982-85)
It was hockey that set Dombrowski up for an impressive gridiron career.
“He was a goalie in hockey,” former Virginia coach Dick Bestwick said. “That’s a knee-bending position, and playing offensive line is about being able to bend your knees and move your feet. So that probably helped him.”
With Dombrowkski guiding the way, the Cavaliers notched three winning seasons in a row and reached its first bowl game. He was the first Wahoos player to be an unanimous All-American.
The stout offensive lineman twice earned the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, annually awarded to the ACC’s best blocker. He was the first tackle to be an outright repeat recipient of that award.
