Ranking the 10 greatest Edmonton Elks in franchise history
6. Johnny Bright, FB (1954-64)
During an era in which the NFL was still integrating, Bright chose to play in Canada instead. He’d finish his professional odyssey in Alberta as the league’s leading rusher with 10,909 yards.
While with Edmonton, the powerful Bright was the CFL’s top ground gainer in three straight seasons and was an All-Western rusher each year from 1957-61. In 1959, he brought home the Schenley Award for Most Outstanding Player.
He was in the backfield for Edmonton’s Grey Cup three-peat from 1954-56 and was inducted to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1970.
