Ranking the 10 greatest Edmonton Elks in franchise history
5. Danny Kepley, LB (1975-84)
Over a decade in Edmonton, the tough-as-nails Kepley was key on a defense that piled up six Grey Cup titles. He was tabbed as the winner of the Schenley Award for Most Outstanding Defensive Player three times.
Kepley frequently grimaced through injuries, including playing an entire season with a torn rotator cuff and half a game in Montreal in 1976 with a spine fracture.
“I hit them as hard as I could on the mouth right from the start of the game so they were thinking this was going to be a long day,” Kepley later said. “Sooner or later, one of us had to quit – and it wasn’t going to be me.”
