Ranking the 9 new Power 5 head coach hires this offseason
3. Jonathan Smith, Michigan State
When he arrived in Corvallis to be the head coach of Oregon State, Smith adopted a program that went 12–36 in the four seasons prior. While it took a few years, with the Beavers going 2-10, 5-7 and 2-5 over Smith’s first three seasons, they bounced back in a big way in 2021 going 7-6 before a 10-3 season in 2022 and an 8-4 campaign this year.
Smith’s first stint as a head coach went swimmingly, well enough for him to earn a chance at Michigan State. He will be taking over a program that had a tumultuous season and it will not be an easy task to bring success back, but if anyone can do it, it’s Smith. One thing that may be a bit difficult for Smith in his transition to the Spartans is his lack of experience coaching in the Midwest as he’s only coached as far East as Montana.
