It was Penn State鈥檚 second season in the Big Ten and it went 12-0 under head coach Joe Paterno defeating No. 14 USC and No. 21 Ohio State in Happy Valley and No. 5 Michigan in the Big House while averaging 47 points per game (). It finished the season with a Rose Bowl win over No. 12 Oregon, but the Cornhuskers would take home the national title after they defeated No. 3 Miami in the Orange Bowl and the Nittany Lions finished as the No. 2 team in the nation.聽
