Top 10 all-time leading rushers in Indiana HS football
2. Sam Mireles, Elwood (2010-13)
Mireles stood at the top of the IHSAA career rushing list for six years, overtaking Otis Shannon who had previously held the record for over a decade. In each of his final three seasons at Elwood, the 5-foot-8, 175-pound back ran for over 2,000 yards, leading to 8,110 total rushing yards in his career. In an October game in 2013, Mireles officially set the rushing record with an impressive 343-yard performance.
Despite Mireles’ elite high school football career, he did not garner much college interest. Although schools like Ball State and Indiana State seemed interested in him, and Mireles worked to bulk up while attending Ivy Tech right after high school, the talented running back never played a down of college football. Still, it doesn’t diminish the lasting legacy he left in the Hoosier State.
Assistant Commissioner Chris Kaufman presented a Sportsmanship Pin to grad Sammy Mireles, the state’s career rushing leader! Mireles is at tonight’s game to see Charlie Spegal of break his state rushing record!
