Top 10 all-time leading rushers in Indiana HS football
1. Charlie Spegal, New Palestine (2016-19)
Spegal is the most recent high school player on this list, and is also Indiana鈥檚 rushing king by a wide margin. In 2019, the running back was named Mr. Football and Indiana鈥檚 Gatorade Player of the Year, rushing for 3,168 yards and 55 touchdowns. That followed a junior season in which he had racked up even more impressive rushing totals of 3,356 yards and 70 touchdowns, as well as freshman and sophomore years in which he had 1,958 yards and 2,385 yards, respectively.
Leading New Palestine to two state titles during his prep career, Spegal graduated as Indiana鈥檚 leader in career points, single-season rushing touchdowns and single-season total touchdowns. However, the most notable number is Spegal鈥檚 record 10,187 career rushing yards, over 2,700 yards better than Sam Mireles.聽
Yet, like Mireles, Spegal was not heavily recruited out of high school. Ultimately, the 5-foot-10, 220-pound back would end up walking on at Indiana, and saw the field in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons for the Hoosiers. Spegal has since transferred to Ball State where he will suit up in 2023.
