Top 5 performances at the Masters by an amateur
3. Billy Joe Patton, 3rd, 1954
Patton was tied for the lead after his first round at the Masters in 1954. He shot a 70 but then followed it up with a 74 and 75 in his next two rounds. Patton bounced back in his final round, shooting a 71 but was still a stroke behind Ben Hogan and Sam Snead. Snead and Hogan went to a playoff in which Snead won. Patton finished 2-over for the event. At the time it was the best finish ever by an amateur at the Masters.
The beginning of the end for amateur Billy Joe Patton鈥檚 storybook run at the 1954 Masters. Patton attempted to play from this spot on 13, made double, and finally surrendered his lead to Sam Snead and Ben Hogan with just 5 holes left.
