Gonzalez collected his lone All-Star selection, finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting and led the majors with 21 wins in his first season with the Nationals. He made at least 27 appearances each season in Washington and posted an ERA under 4.00 five times. Gonzalez remains fourth in the franchise record books with 213 starts and 1,215 strikeouts.
