Ranking the 7 NFL head coach hirings of the 2025 offseason
7. Brian Schottenheimer, Dallas Cowboys
Schottenheimer is the most curious hire of this year’s head-coaching cycle. That’s not to say he can’t succeed in his new role in Dallas, but Jerry Jones moving on from a Super Bowl-winning coach like Mike McCarthy to someone who has no head-coaching experience was a surprise. The Cowboys dragged their feet with the McCarthy decision, slightly limiting the candidate pool by the time they were in their coaching search. Staying in-house might have ultimately been one of their best options, as Schottenheimer is familiar with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and the rest of the Cowboys’ stars. The 51-year-old has coached in the NFL since 1997 and has been an offensive coordinator for four teams, including Dallas the last two years. His experience will be beneficial, but the Cowboys likely could have made a hire with greater upside.
