Top 10 Stanford Cardinal football players of all time
3. Jim Plunkett, QB (1968-71)
The second Cardinal to have his jersey number retired, Plunkett is the first and only Stanford player to win the Heisman Trophy, which he did in 1970, beating Archie Manning of Mississippi and Joe Theismann of Notre Dame. As a senior, Plunkett threw for 2,715 yards and 19 touchdowns, won the Pac-8 title, and defeated No. 1 Ohio State in the 1971 Rose Bowl. When Plunkett graduated, he held school records for pass completions (530), net yards passing (7,544), and touchdown passes (52). Plunkett was selected by the New England Patriots as the number one overall draft choice in 1971 and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1990.
