2. John Elway, QB (1979-82)
Elway is the third player in Cardinal history to have his jersey number retired. At the end of his college career, he threw 774 passes for 77 touchdowns and 9,349 yards. His 24 touchdown passes in 1982 led the nation and Elway still holds the Stanford record for touchdown passes in a game with six in 1980. He was the No. 1 pick in the 1983 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.聽
