7. Ernie Nevers, RB (1922-25)
Nevers was a multi-sport athlete at Stanford, competing for the Cardinal in football, basketball, baseball and track. But for football, Nevers was the backbone of the team. He set a Rose Bowl Game single-game rushing record in 1925, running for 114 yards on 34 carries against Notre Dame. He also played on nearly 80 percent of Stanford鈥檚 defensive plays and was named a first-team All-American later that year. In 1969, Nevers was named to Football’s All-Time Team, part of College Football’s Centennial Celebration. Nevers was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951 and is the first Cardinal to have his jersey number retired.
