Ranking each Big Ten football head coach entering 2024 season
14. Sherrone Moore, Michigan
due to the program’s sign-stealing scandal as he begins his first season as a collegiate head coach at Michigan following Jim Harbaugh’s departure. It remains to be seen what will come of that, but the 38-year-old will aim to lead a seamless transition for the reigning national champions in 2024. Moore has coached collegiately since 2009 and under Harbaugh at Michigan since 2018. His relative lack of experience keeps him low on this list, but he has looked ready for this role while filling in for Harbaugh in the past.
13. Greg Schiano, Rutgers
Schiano is one of the more recognizable names on this list as he spent his first season at Rutgers as an assistant way back in 1989. He had stops at Penn State, Miami and in the NFL with the Bears before a successful decade as the Scarlet Knights’ head coach in the 2000s. That earned the 58-year-old an ultimately unsuccessful NFL opportunity with the Buccaneers before he returned to Rutgers in 2020. The program has gone just 19-28 since but finally produced a winning season last year and appears on the rise under Schiano’s reign.
12. Curt Cignetti, Indiana
Cignetti has never coached in the Big Ten in any capacity, but one of the conference’s fresh faces brings a wealth of experience with him to Indiana as he has coached at the collegiate level for over 40 years. The 63-year-old has compiled a 119-35 record as a head coach since 2011 with Division II IUP, Elon and James Madison, most recently helping the Dukes successfully transition to the FBS level. His offensive background and experience give Indiana upside going forward.
11. Jedd Fisch, Washington
Fisch doesn’t necessarily have the experience or success as a head coach that many do on this list, but his resume is still highly impressive. Fisch has spent a lot of time in the NFL as an assistant with the Texans, Ravens, Broncos, Seahawks, Jaguars, Rams and Patriots. He has also worked for some high-level college programs like Florida, Miami, UCLA, Minnesota and Michigan. The 48-year-old is just 17-22 all-time as a head coach, but he quickly turned Arizona around in three seasons and steps into a terrific situation at Washington.
