Ranking each Big 12 starting QB for the 2024 football season

8. Avery Johnson, Kansas State

Johnson arrived at Kansas State as a top-100 recruit in the Class of 2023 and he will look to live up to the hype in his first year as a full-time starter for the Wildcats following Will Howard’s departure. Johnson saw limited action as a passer behind Howard last year and was used more often as a run-game option for head coach Chris Klieman as he put up just shy of 300 yards on the ground while finding the end zone seven times. Johnson also threw for 479 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. A majority of that production came during an explosive showing in the Wildcats’ Pop-Tarts Bowl win where he threw for 178 yards, ran for 71 yards and scored three total touchdowns. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound sophomore needs more experience, but he has the potential to eventually become one of the top quarterbacks in the conference.
