Ranking the 10 greatest Calgary Stampeders of all time
7. Will Johnson, DE (1989-96)
Johnson knew how to get to the quarterback.
He did so very often.
When inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2021, Johnson’s 99 sacks were slotted as 13th on the CFL’s all-time list — and first in Stampeders lore. He paced the league in that category in 1991 and 1994 and accounted for at least nine sacks in eight of his nine seasons.
Thanks to a 15-sack go-round in 1991, he was the tabbed as the West Division’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player. During his career, he also won the 1992 Grey Cup and had 288 stops, eight fumble recoveries, and a pick.
Will Johnson was an outstanding defensive end with Calgary Stampeders 1989-1996. He made a club record 99 QB sacks (later tied by Charleston Hughes), was a 6-time West, 5-time CFL all-star and Grey Cup champion in 1992. He later spent many years as a Calgary policeman.
