Ranking the 10 greatest Calgary Stampeders of all time
2. Wayne Harris, LB (1961-72)
Harris鈥 collisions were booming. His personality was anything but.
The 1971 Grey Cup MVP was tabbed as an All-Canadian honoree eight times and was a two-time nominee for the CFL鈥檚 Most Outstanding Player Award. He also won the Schenley Most Outstanding Lineman Award four times.
Harris, a Canadian Football Hall of Famer, only played in Calgary during his 11-year professional gridiron career. Affectionately known as 鈥淭he Thumper,鈥 the middle linebacker dressed for the Stampeders before tackles and sacks were logged, but he鈥檚 listed as recording 28 interceptions and 24 fumble recoveries for the team.
Harris opted to play for Calgary instead of the American Football League鈥檚 Boston Patriots, who drafted him after his collegiate odyssey at Arkansas.
Remembering when a series of stamps honouring CFL players from each of the 9 teams was launched at a joint press conference by Calgary Stampeders and Canada Post on Aug. 22, 2012. Wayne (Thumper #55) Harris was the Calgary player selected as part of the 100th Grey Cup.
