Ranking the 10 greatest Calgary Stampeders of all time
1. Doug Flutie, QB (1992-96)
Flutie鈥檚 reputation preceded him. He did nothing but add to it while with the Stampeders.
The 1984 Heisman Trophy winner joined Calgary after setting single-season records for passing yards, completions, and 300-yard passing games with the BC Lions in 1991.
Flutie spent half his eight-year CFL tenure with the Stamps and, right away, helped end the team鈥檚 two-decade-long Grey Cup drought in 1992. In that title game win over Winnipeg, he threw for 480 yards, then the second-highest output in any Grey Cup.
That season, Flutie collected his second of four straight Most Outstanding Player awards. He set a single-season high of 44 touchdown passes in 1993 before posting 48 the next year.
After the game I overheard a kid about Luke鈥檚 age ask his dad who the greatest player in CFL history was. His dad answered Doug Flutie.
This is one of the reasons why I created Calgary Stampeders Classics. To give young fans a chance to see Doug in his days with the Stamps.
