Top 10 freshman NCAA softball players during 2024 season
7. Maddia Groff, LHP, Southern Illinois
Southern Illinois reached last year鈥檚 NCAA softball tournament and is trending toward making a repeat appearance in 2024 as the Salukis have started the season 26-8 and a strong 11-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. They may have an opportunity to go deeper into postseason play this year thanks to their sensational freshman pitcher, Groff. Currently, Groff has the second-best ERA among Division I players (0.77) to go along with a 0.71 WHIP and a .164 opponent batting average. The 5-foot-4 southpaw also ranks in the top 20 in the country with 130 strikeouts across 127 innings and has posted an impressive 18-2 record where she has thrown 12 complete games, including Southern Illinois鈥 first-ever seven-inning perfect game in her first career start.
