Quarterback Randy Duncan led the way in 1958 and the Hawkeyes finished 8-1-1 with him under center, won a Rose Bowl and were named national champions by the Footballers Writers Association of America (FWAA). They finished No. 2 in the AP poll, the highest finish in a season of Iowa football and Duncan entered the NFL draft the following season, becoming the school鈥檚 only No. 1 overall pick.
