Another Johnson, though not related to Fred, Gerard had a great junior season for the Falcons, helping the team make the Class 5A playoffs and regional semifinals with a 9-3 record. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound defensive end finished the year with 48 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, eight sacks, seven pass deflections and three forced fumbles.
Gerard is considered one of the best players in Virginia and is ranked as highly as the No. 3 player in the state by . With his high regard in the scouting industry coupled with great tape, Gerard earned 20 scholarship offers from schools such as Boston College, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Wake Forest. He ultimately chose to commit to Virginia Tech on July 1.
