2. Jaylen Mbakwe, CB, Clay-Chalkville
Mbakwe is the top-ranked defender in the state of Alabama but did a little bit of everything for his Cougars team. In addition to his standout play at cornerback, Mbakwe also caught 41 passes for 615 yards and nine TDs, ran for 118 yards and two TDs and returned nine kickoffs for 145 yards and two more scores.
While he clearly excelled on offense, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound Mbakwe is projected to stay in the defensive backfield at the next level. Given his great play, Mbakwe is ranked as a five-star prospect by ESPN, 247Sports and On3 and is considered the top player in the state by ESPN. He earned 29 offers including from Auburn, Clemson, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame and USC but chose to stay home at Alabama. As a top playmaker in the state regardless of position, Mbakwe should be expected to once again dominate this fall.
