Top 10 all-time leading rushers in Texas HS football
7. Rodney Thomas, Groveton (1987-90)
Thomas is another player on this list who left his mark in Texas at the prep and collegiate levels before going on to the NFL. That began with an impressive 8,441 yards during his high school career, leading Groveton to two state titles. Thomas added 115 rushing touchdowns in his time at Groveton, putting together one of the best single-season rushing years in Texas high school football history as a senior with 3,701 yards.
Like many of Texas’ best rushers, Thomas stayed in the Lone Star State for college at Texas A&M. Although he never produced a 1,000-yard season for the Aggies, the 5-foot-10, 210-pound running back was consistent with 868 rushing yards or more in each of his final three seasons in College Station.
The star halfback remained close to home for the beginning of his pro career as well after being selected No. 89 overall by the Houston Oilers in the 1995 NFL Draft. There, he had 947 rushing yards in his rookie season before taking a back seat to Eddie George as the Oilers became the Tennessee Titans. Thomas played one final season in Atlanta in 2001, ending his NFL career with 1,973 career rushing yards and 15 total touchdowns.
