Bob Huggins resigns; 5 candidates to replace WVU head coach
5. John Beilein
This hiring would be interesting in both good and bad ways. Beilein is one of the most successful head coaches in the history of college basketball with a 754–425 overall record, Coach of the Year honors in three different conferences and two Final Four appearances. Beilein also has experience handling programs mired in controversy as he took over a Michigan Wolverines program still in the midst of an NCAA violation in 2007 and brought it back to prominence.
However, Beilen left the Mountaineers program after a lot of success to take that Michigan job and many WVU fans are still hurt by that decision. Add the fact that Beilein is 70 years old and hasn’t coached at the collegiate level since 2019 and it becomes more difficult to see him courtside for West Virginia. While Beilein may be a legend and could keep the program from sinking, there may be better choices for the Mountaineers.
