Brandon Newman enters transfer portal; 5 possible landing spots
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (BVM) 鈥� The Purdue Boilermakers are coming off a tremendous season in which they won Big Ten regular season and conference tournament championships. Although the year ended on a low note after they were upset by No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson in the NCAA Tournament, Purdue鈥檚 future remains bright.
Wooden Award winner Zach Edey garnered most of the headlines last season for Purdue, but there were a lot of solid role players that made Matt Painter鈥檚 squad a lethal team. One of those guys was Brandon Newman, who recently announced he is entering the transfer portal after three years in West Lafayette, Indiana.聽
A native of Valparaiso, Indiana, Newman was a star prior to his time at Purdue, averaging 27.2 points and 8.8 rebounds in his senior year at Valparaiso High School. He claimed Indiana鈥檚 Mr. Basketball honor that year, becoming one of several Mr. Basketball winners from the Hoosier State to join Painter鈥檚 roster in recent years.
After redshirting in 2019-20, Newman started 23 games in his first season on the floor at Purdue. He would go on to average eight points and 3.5 rebounds, but a 29-point outing during the heart of the Big Ten season proved the potential the guard had.

Newman would take a step back as he averaged just 4.6 points while seeing less action on a deep Purdue team in 2021-22, but rebounded this past season with six double-digit scoring games. The 6-foot-5 guard became an important piece of Purdue鈥檚 rotation late in the year, putting up a 19-point game in a home win over Illinois to close the regular season, and a 15-point performance in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals as he played 33 minutes against Ohio State.
Now, Purdue will lose what was one of its emerging pieces on its roster, as Newman will look to begin the next chapter of his basketball career.
