Zack Martin, Mark Clayton top Indianapolis’ 10 best NFL stars

6. Jeff George, QB, Warren Central

George was a multi-sport star at Warren Central, but his talent on the gridiron was undeniable as he became the first winner of the Gatorade National Player of the Year award in 1985. After beginning his college career at Purdue, George’s stardom came with the Illinois Fighting Illini as he threw for nearly 5,000 yards and 31 touchdowns in 1988 and 1989. His success in college made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft as he was selected by the Indianapolis Colts. Unfortunately, George would never quite live up to the billing, at least not in his time with his hometown team. Over his four years with the Colts, the quarterback racked up 9,551 yards, but interceptions plagued him as he threw 46 across his four seasons in Indy compared to just 41 touchdowns. George was then traded to the Falcons where he began to find his way in the league, throwing for 3,734 yards in 1994 and 4,143 yards in 1995. However, three games into 1996, George was suspended after a sideline argument with head coach June Jones. George went on to join the Oakland Raiders where he led the league in passing yards in 1997 (3,917). After a year playing in Minnesota and a couple of more in Washington, George made brief appearances on the rosters of the Seahawks, Bears and Raiders once again before finally hanging it up in 2006. George’s son, Jeff Jr., also went on to star at Warren Central and played college football at Pitt.
