UNM men’s golfers earn Mountain West honors
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) — A trio of University of New Mexico golfers have earned conference honors after the Lobos captured their second straight Mountain West championship earlier this month. Junior Sam Choi and sophomore Albert Boneta earned spots on the all-conference team while Basiten Amat was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year.Â
Choi leads UNM with a 70.52 scoring average and GolfStat currently ranks him as the No. 23 individual in the nation. Choi, whose season-low round score is 66, has had the top score for the Lobos in five of the seven tournaments they’ve competed in, including the Mountain West tourney where he finished tied for first before falling short of the individual title in a four-player playoff.Â
Boneta ranks second on the team with a 71.33 scoring average and he’s led UNM in two of its tournaments this season. He’s also recorded a team-low round of 65 on two occasions.Â
Amat has the Lobos’ highest counted round percentage (94.44%), and he’s averaging 72.50 strokes per round. The France native finished 11th individually at the Mountain West tournament.
The back-to-back conference champions are back in action this week on their home course as they host the NCAA Albuquerque Regional. UNM, ranked No. 29 in the country, is a No. 5 seed for the three-round tourney that runs today through Wednesday. The top-five scoring teams will advance out of the regional.
