UNM men鈥檚 golf wins second straight Mountain West title
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) 鈥� The spring of conference championships continued for the University of New Mexico this past weekend with men鈥檚 golf becoming the latest team to capture a Mountain West title.
The Lobos broke the conference record for lowest 18-hole scoring total with a three-round score of 19-under-par 269 as they secured their second consecutive MW title Saturday in Tucson, Ariz. The championship comes 10 days after the women鈥檚 golf program claimed its ninth conference title. The men鈥檚 tennis team won its second straight MW title April 24 and the women鈥檚 soccer team secured its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2011 by beating San Diego State for the conference title April 17.
UNM men鈥檚 golf claimed its conference-record eighth title by beating Nevada in a playoff 鈥� just the second Mountain West Conference championship to be decided in such a way.
鈥淔or our team to go back out there [on hole 18] for the playoff and play that hole again, our guys really answered that challenge,鈥� UNM head coach Glen Millican said in a press release.
Lobos junior Sam Choi shot a low three-round score of 209 (7 under par) to tie for first individually before falling short of the individual title in a four-player playoff.
Next up for UNM will be NCAA Regionals, which will be held later this month at a site still to be determined. The NCAA Selection Show will be broadcast on The Golf Channel on Wednesday at 12 p.m. MT.
