UNM freshman McDonald, Coach Trujillo earn Mountain West awards
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) 鈥 Two weeks removed from winning the Mountain West Conference women鈥檚 golf title for the first time since 2014, the New Mexico Lobos earned some more postseason accolades Thursday. Freshman Myah McDonald was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year while head coach Jill Trujillo was tabbed as the MW Coach of the Year. Sophomores Napat 鈥淛enny鈥 Lertsadwattana 鈥 last year鈥檚 MW Freshman of the Year 鈥 and Lauren Leigh were also named second team all-conference.
McDonald has had a strong first season with UNM and just recently entered GolfStat鈥檚 rankings of the top 250 players in the nation. The freshman has recorded a 75.33 stroke average and 17 of her 18 rounds have counted toward the Lobos鈥 team score this season. Her top finish took place at the Mountain West Tournament where she tied for fourth overall with Lertsadwattana. McDonald also had UNM鈥檚 only three-round score under par (-1) this season at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque.聽
It鈥檚 the third time Trujillo has earned the conference鈥檚 top coaching honor and the first time since 2014 when the Lobos claimed their last Mountain West title. The conference championship earned UNM an automatic bid to NCAA Regionals. The Lobos compete at the Columbus Regional beginning Monday in Columbus, Ohio.
