Lobos come back to claim ninth Mountain West women’s golf title
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team began the Mountain West Conference tournament as the favorite to win it — before San Diego State built an 11-stroke lead through the first two of three rounds.
But while their odds of taking the title may have been longer when the final round of play began Wednesday on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., that didn’t stop the Lobos from capturing the championship. UNM put together a 15-stroke comeback to overtake the Aztecs by four and claim a conference-record ninth Mountain West title.
Three Lobos finished among the top six overall finishers, including sophomore Lauren Lehigh who tied for first before losing a three-hole playoff to SDSU’s Sara Kjellker for the individual title. Lehigh posted a three-round total of 1 over par (217) while teammates Napat Lertsadwattana and Myah McDonald both tied for fourth individually at 4 over par (220).
The team championship is UNM’s first since 2014 and fifth under the guidance of head coach Jill Trujillo. Next up for the Lobos will be NCAA Regionals which will be held in late May at a site still to be determined.
