One play can change everything: Meet Milton QB Derrick Baker
MILTON, Ga. — For Milton High School senior quarterback Derrick Baker, football has always been about more than wins and losses. After spending 12 years in the sport, Baker has learned that success is built just as much on character and perseverance as it is on talent.
That lesson became especially clear last season when a season-ending wrist injury forced him to watch from the sidelines. The setback was difficult, but it also reshaped his perspective.

鈥淟ast season, suffering a season-ending wrist injury reminded me that football can be taken away in an instant,鈥 Baker shared. 鈥淭hat experience challenged me mentally, strengthened my faith, and taught me to appreciate every opportunity to compete.鈥
Now healthy and committed to the University of Tennessee, Baker enters his senior season with renewed purpose and gratitude. Rather than focusing solely on the future, he鈥檚 determined to make the most of every snap while continuing to grow as both a player and a leader. Baker has earned a reputation for his leadership, work ethic and competitive drive, serving as a captain for the Eagles while preparing for the next level.

Like many athletes, Baker admits the mental side of the game can be his greatest challenge. He shared that he overcomes pressure by understanding his strengths, relentlessly improving his weaknesses and staying true to himself. The best advice he鈥檚 ever received, he shared, is to 鈥渁lways stay levelheaded and stay true to who you are.鈥
Before every game, Baker follows a routine that helps him focus. He walks the field, visualizes the game ahead while listening to music, then turns off all electronics to spend time connecting with his teammates before kickoff.
Away from football, Baker enjoys spending time with family and friends and continuing to train. He credits his family, coaches, teammates and mentors for helping him reach this point and knows none of his journey has happened alone.

Looking ahead, Baker dreams of having a successful college career and one day playing in the NFL. But regardless of where football takes him, his greatest goal remains unchanged.
鈥淚f football gives me a platform, I hope to use it to positively impact others and be remembered more for the person I was than the athlete I became,鈥 Baker shared.
