Former Riverdale, Central Magnet baseball coach Buddy Powers dies
Buddy Powers, who took both Riverdale and Central Magnet to the TSSAA state baseball tournament, died on Aug. 4 at the age of 63 after a battle with cancer, his daughter Lindsay confirmed to the DNJ. Powers coached Riverdale for 16 seasons during the 1990s and 2000s, leading the Warriors to the state tournament in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2006. He coached at Central Magnet for three varsity seasons, leading the Tigers to back-to-back state tourney appearances in 2013 and 2014 before resigning following the team's second state run.
