Westfield MS track & field celebrates record-breaking season
WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Westfield Middle School track and field program delivered a season filled with growth, perseverance, teamwork, and one unforgettable accomplishment that will be remembered for years to come.
Under the leadership of head coaches Tanner Davis and Marah Martinez, the Shamrocks put together one of the most memorable seasons in program history, highlighted by the boys 4×400 relay team breaking a 22-year-old school record 鈥� an achievement that quickly became a proud moment for the entire WMS community.
鈥淭his was WMS鈥檚 biggest track team of all time,鈥� Davis said.
More than 250 athletes competed across the 7th and 8th grade boys and girls teams this spring, giving the program tremendous depth and energy. While the roster featured a strong group of experienced 8th graders, many younger athletes stepped into varsity roles and gained valuable experience throughout the season.
The season itself brought plenty of challenges. Unpredictable weather forced multiple meets to be canceled, while others took place in cold and windy conditions. Still, both coaches said the athletes handled adversity with maturity and determination.
鈥淭he kids didn鈥檛 complain,鈥� Davis said. 鈥淭hey embraced it and tried their best.鈥�
Martinez agreed, praising the athletes for their dedication throughout the season.
鈥淭his season was very interesting due to the weather and a couple of track meets getting canceled,鈥� Martinez said. 鈥淗owever, these athletes continued to work hard and showed dedication at practices and meets.鈥�
Beyond the results on the track, both coaches pointed to the positive culture within the program as one of the team鈥檚 greatest strengths.
According to Davis, what truly separated this group was the way teammates supported one another throughout the season.
鈥淭hey were a very tight-knit group who truly wanted their teammates to succeed,鈥� he said.
Martinez said it was especially rewarding to watch returning athletes provide leadership while younger athletes steadily built confidence throughout the spring.
鈥淚t was absolutely amazing to see the athletes at practices or meets have such a positive and encouraging team environment,鈥� Martinez said. 鈥淭hat was really cool to see.鈥�
That team-first mentality was on full display during the historic run by the boys 4×400 relay team. From the beginning of the season, the athletes set their sights on breaking the long-standing school record.
With three returning runners and one talented seventh grader, the coaches believed the goal was within reach if the group stayed committed and continued improving each week.
鈥淲e knew early on they weren鈥檛 too far off from the record,鈥� Davis said. 鈥淓ach meet they would get a little bit closer, and that only fueled them to push themselves even more.鈥�
Martinez worked closely with the mid-distance runners throughout the season, helping prepare the relay team as they steadily closed in on the record.
Then came the moment everything came together.
鈥淚 remember looking at the time after each split and after the last exchange thinking they might actually pull this off,鈥� Davis said.
As anchor runner Luke Virgona crossed the finish line, he immediately looked toward the timer, hoping the team had accomplished its mission.
The final result was almost too close to call.
But once the official time was posted and the runners realized they had broken the 22-year-old school record, the celebration erupted.
鈥淭hey all hugged and jumped around screaming, 鈥榃E DID IT! We just broke the school record! LET鈥橲 GO!!!鈥欌�� Davis said.
For Martinez, the moment was emotional for everyone involved.
鈥淥h my goodness!! That was such a great moment during the track season,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 ended up crying.鈥�
She said the accomplishment reflected not only talent, but also the trust and hard work the athletes displayed throughout the season.
鈥淭hose athletes deserved that,鈥� Martinez said. 鈥淚t really reflected their hard work and trust in one another throughout the season.鈥�
The season featured several other standout accomplishments as well. Bristol Holman captured a conference championship in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches. Seventh graders Zuri White and Chatham Hauser delivered dominant performances in the hurdles, finishing first and second in both the 100-meter and 200-meter hurdles at the conference championships.
Leadership across the roster also played a major role in the team鈥檚 success.
Davis praised Luke and Everett Virgona for consistently setting the standard through their work ethic and commitment. Distance runners Graham Aaron, Matthew Falin, Miles Christy, and Adam Lindemann-Cox also helped lead by example and push teammates to improve.
On the girls side, White and Hauser emerged as strong leaders despite being only seventh graders, while eighth graders Cora Fischer and Brooks Kutchma helped mentor younger athletes throughout the season.
For both coaches, some of the season鈥檚 proudest moments came from watching athletes grow in confidence while supporting one another along the way.
鈥淢y proudest moment as a coach this season was watching the athletes truly trust and believe in themselves and each other,鈥� Martinez said. 鈥淲hether that was breaking the school record, cheering on their teammates, or just pushing each other to be better each day.鈥�
Davis said he was especially proud of the way athletes responded to adversity all season long.
鈥淭hey handled all the bad weather and last-minute changes so well,鈥� he said. 鈥淭hey didn鈥檛 complain, but rather embraced the challenge and responded with their best.鈥�
Beyond wins and records, both coaches hope athletes leave the program with lessons they can carry into everyday life.
鈥淢y purpose as a coach is to love, teach, and mentor student-athletes in a way that gives them the tools to accomplish their goals not only in their sport but in their lives,鈥� Davis said.
Martinez echoed that message, saying she hopes athletes take away lessons about discipline, teamwork, confidence, and perseverance.
鈥淪uccess does not come overnight,鈥� Martinez said. 鈥淵ou have to continue to work hard, be consistent, and push through challenges.鈥�
Both coaches also credited the coaching staff, athletic director Doug Luce, and numerous volunteers for helping make the season possible, calling their fellow coaches 鈥渢he best middle school track coaches in the state.鈥�
And after a season filled with memorable performances, conference success, personal growth, and a relay team that etched its name into school history, the future of WMS track and field looks brighter than ever.
