More Than a Team: Cherokee Soccer鈥檚 Standout Season

CANTON, Ga. — Under the glow of the stadium lights, with the clock ticking down and the crowd on their feet, the Cherokee High School Varsity Girls soccer team continues to prove that their season is less about the number of wins, and more about the shared drive to succeed.

With 13 victories under their belt, the Warriors have put together quite an impressive season. The girls have proven themselves by building momentum in region play to establish their team as one to watch. With a strong record (13-2) and several decisive victories, the Warriors team has shown growth from last season by turning close games into confident performances on the field.

At the center of that success are players who lead both on and off the field. The captains鈥 Molly McCarty, Bailey Viennette, Aidyn Hurst, and Addison Bendzsuk 鈥 have set a tone with their leadership, while underclassmen like Bethany Mayo and Mikayla Galindo have stepped up in crucial moments during tough games. Whether it is a forward finding the net, a goalkeeper making clutch saves, or a midfielder controlling the pace, each athlete had a specific role on the field.

Addison emphasizes that the team’s special bond is what pushed them through the season, 鈥淐herokee soccer has always been more like a family and like sisters. No matter what grade, everybody is truly family and friends. I think because we have such a strong connection off the field, our time on the field is even better.鈥

The players emphasize that the team鈥檚 connection off the field translates directly into the performance seen at each game.

Addison goes on to state, 鈥淒uring this season, we actually had a little bit of a tough patch when we felt like our focus was really off and no one鈥檚 effort was there in practice. All the captains collectively came together and we scheduled a player meeting to talk about what we thought was off with the team and just express our feelings. I think that really helped us to build and become the team we were with our record-breaking season. Our biggest thing was communication and just always being there for each other. I have never been on a team that is so welcoming and every single girl is so amazing. This program is just really special, and I don鈥檛 know any other high school program that has that great of coaching staff, athletic directors, and an overall team chemistry. I think that鈥檚 truly why we were so successful.鈥

That chemistry did not happen overnight. After long practices, team bonding, and commitment to improvement, Cherokee has built a culture around accountability and support. Players emphasize that the commitment to the team off the field played a crucial role in the play on the field.

Like any season, it hasn鈥檛 been one without obstacles. The Warriors have battled tough opponents while navigating the ups and downs of their competitive schedule. But instead of letting some of the setbacks define them, the team has used those crucial moments as motivation.

Some of the team鈥檚 biggest highlights have come out of those high-pressure matchups. From close finishes to dominating wins, Cherokee has consistently risen to the occasion when it is needed most. From the opening whistle to the final playoff game of the season, Cherokee鈥檚 Varsity Girls soccer team has shown up and shown out. These girls have really defined what it means to play with their whole heart.
