Building a Lacrosse Legacy: Cherokee Jr. Warriors Continue to Grow

CANTON, Ga. — Since launching in 2017, Cherokee Jr Warriors Lacrosse has steadily built one of the area’s most exciting youth sports programs, developing young athletes while growing the game of lacrosse throughout Cherokee County. What began as a small program has evolved into a thriving community of players, coaches and families committed to teamwork, sportsmanship and competitive excellence.

This spring marked another milestone season for the Warriors, highlighted by strong playoff performances and the addition of an elementary girls program.

The boys teams continued their impressive record by earning bracket championships for the third consecutive year. The success reflects years of investment in coaching, fundamentals and building a true feeder system for local high school lacrosse.

One of the leaders helping shape that future is first-year head coach Sam Hardin. A recent college graduate and Cherokee High School alumnus, Hardin brings both energy and familiarity to the sidelines. Having once worn the Warrior jersey himself, he now has the opportunity to mentor the next generation of Cherokee players.

The girls side of the program also enjoyed a standout season. The middle school girls team, led by head coach Dan Platko, battled its way to the championship game before finishing as tournament runner-up after a hard-fought loss in the finals.

Another big accomplishment of the year was the launch of the elementary girls program. Head coach Kayla Spawn led the inaugural squad as they competed in the Southern Edge Conference, introducing younger players to the sport while building a foundation for the future of girls lacrosse in Cherokee County.

The new elementary girls teams played all of their games at River Ridge High School with doubleheaders scheduled every Sunday throughout the season.

Across the country, youth lacrosse has seen significant growth in recent years, and Cherokee Jr Warriors is helping ensure local athletes have opportunities to learn and compete close to home.

More importantly, the program’s focus extends beyond wins and losses. Coaches emphasize teamwork, leadership, discipline and confidence — lessons that will benefit players long after their playing days are over. The organization’s mission centers on creating a positive environment where athletes can grow both on and off the field.

As the Warriors continue expanding, the future looks bright for lacrosse in Cherokee County. With experienced coaches, passionate families and a growing number of young athletes picking up a stick for the first time, Cherokee Jr Warriors is proving that the sport is no longer just emerging locally — it’s thriving.
