Meet Jesse McCray: Head Coach of Staples girls track and field

WESTPORT, Conn. — Jesse McCray, the Head Coach of the Staples Girls Track and Field team, has become a cornerstone of the program and has had a career spanning over two decades. Entering his 21st year as head coach, McCray’s tenure at Staples is marked by numerous championships, state records, and unforgettable moments. His influence, however, extends beyond the trophies and accolades. He is known for his dedication to his athletes, his resilience, and his belief in the potential of every young woman on his team.

McCray’s journey in coaching began in 1989 at Danbury High School, where he served as the assistant football and boys track coach, specifically coaching the field events. His dedication to the sport and his athletes was recognized this year when he was inducted into the Danbury Athletics Hall of Fame. This honor underscores his influence on student-athletes over his career and highlights his enduring commitment to coaching. Today, at Staples, he brings decades of knowledge and experience to the girls’ track and field program, creating a legacy that will impact future athletes for years to come.

Coach McCray attributes much of his team’s success to their dedication to the demands of the sport. He emphasizes a balanced approach, including track workouts, weight training, proper nutrition, and sufficient rest. “Our athletes understand the importance of each element,” he explains. This holistic approach to training has produced results that speak for themselves. Under McCray’s guidance, Staples athletes have set 31 out of the school’s 35 event records, with several holding state records. His athletes have earned All-American status, and the team boasts numerous regional and state athletes of the year, including a Penn Relay champion.

While McCray values each championship win, he believes the true reward is watching new faces experience these moments for the first time. Each victory, to him, is an opportunity to see fresh excitement and dedication from his athletes, which keeps the program vibrant year after year.

Setbacks are inevitable in a demanding sport like track and field. For McCray, focusing on moving forward is the key to handling disappointment. “We don’t have time to dwell on negative moments,” he says. When an athlete has a disappointing performance, the team addresses it briefly, learns from it, and shifts its focus to improvement. This approach fosters mental resilience and keeps the team in a forward-looking mindset, building the confidence they need to bounce back and continue striving for success.

McCray’s proudest moments aren’t confined to any single championship or record. Instead, he views each season as a new chapter filled with unique 海角社区 and memories. He treasures the camaraderie he shares with his coaching colleagues, many of whom have become close friends. Among them are coaches Scott Burns, a former high school classmate, Sarah Vannucci, Cari Moore, David Wright, and Rachel DeGioia. Together, they’ve led the Staples team to multiple state championships and national competitions, all while sharing personal milestones, such as watching each other’s children grow up.

“Some of my best memories have come from these friendships,” McCray shares. For him, the friendships and shared experiences add a personal layer to the team’s achievements, making every win more meaningful.

The biggest life lesson McCray has learned through coaching is to remain positive and mentally tough, even in challenging times. He recalls having difficulty preparing for a biopsy and wondering if he should take time away from coaching. But the thought of being there for his team motivated him to stay. Reflecting on that time, McCray credits his athletes with helping him through. “Ingrid Johnson, Emily Hanrahan, and Kristen Weiler were just outstanding athletes,” he says. “They don’t know it, but they were the reason I stayed in coaching during that tough period.” The experience solidified his commitment to his athletes and underscored the importance of resilience鈥攁 lesson he continues to instill in his team today.

When asked about the legacy he hopes to leave, McCray’s answer is heartfelt and straightforward: “I just want to be remembered as someone who believed in the girls in the program and as an advocate for the girls’ program.” More than records and titles, he wants his athletes to remember him as genuinely caring about their development and potential.

As Coach Jesse McCray enters his 21st season, his legacy is already evident in the athletes he has coached, the records his team has broken, and the strength of character he has fostered within each of them. His unwavering belief in his athletes and his commitment to excellence has made him a valued and respected figure in the Staples Girls Track and Field program鈥攁nd a true inspiration in the community.
