Yorba Linda鈥檚 Jeff Bailey named coach of the year by Los Angeles Chargers

YORBA LINDA, Calif. — In the world of high school sports, few accolades carry the weight and prestige of being recognized as Coach of the Year. For Yorba Linda High School’s Jeff Bailey, this honor, awarded by the Los Angeles Chargers, is not just a recognition of his decades-long coaching career but also to the profound impact he has had on the Yorba Linda community.

Bailey, 55, has been at the helm of the Yorba Linda High School football program since its inception in 2009. With over three decades of coaching experience, his commitment to his players, his school, and the sport has shaped a program synonymous with excellence, discipline, and community spirit.

When Yorba Linda High School opened its doors, Bailey faced the unique challenge of creating a football program from scratch. Over the years, he has transformed a fledgling team into a powerhouse, leading them to multiple championships, including the school鈥檚 first CIF title in 2016. That particular victory was especially memorable for Bailey as it was shared with his son, who was part of the team.

“Winning YLHS鈥檚 first CIF championship with my son on the team was pretty darn awesome,” Bailey reminisces. It鈥檚 one of many standout moments in his career, which includes being part of five championship teams as a coach, four of those as head coach.

Challenges and Core Values

At a smaller public school like Yorba Linda High, Bailey notes that success requires developing a new team each year. 鈥淲e have to re-earn it every year,鈥 he explains. 鈥淥ur offseason and the development of the kids we have is critical for our success. We work very hard to make that happen each year.鈥

Discipline is at the heart of Bailey鈥檚 coaching philosophy. He believes football remains a vital way to instill values that transcend the field. 鈥淚t鈥檚 truly the last form of discipline nowadays,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e want to create good young men, and the byproduct of that is we win a lot of football games.鈥

A Mentor and a Friend

Bailey has drawn life lessons from every coach he鈥檚 ever been around, good or bad. He credits much of his coaching philosophy to his mentor, Gary Meek, a respected figure in the Yorba Linda community. 鈥淚 pattern everything I do off of him,鈥 Bailey shares. 鈥淗e鈥檚 definitely a great man in this community.鈥

This mentorship and the camaraderie with his coaching staff have been instrumental in Bailey鈥檚 success. 鈥淎ny success I鈥檝e had over the years has been due to the hard work and dedication of the best coaches ever to work with,鈥 he says, listing a team of dedicated assistants he considers family: Rich Burrell, John Domen, Jon Aed, Gary Bowers, Steve Ditolla, Tommy Storing, Josh Zaha, Steve Bowers, and Augie Oropeza.

More Than a Coach

While football is Bailey鈥檚 passion, he鈥檚 just as enthusiastic about Sunday dinners with his family, where cooking becomes his creative outlet. 鈥淪unday dinners at the Bailey鈥檚 are a pretty special deal,鈥 he notes.

Bailey also values his role as a mentor and father figure to his players. 鈥淚 treat my players like I treat my own kids. Hard on them but love them to death,鈥 he says. This approach has earned him the respect and admiration of countless student-athletes who have passed through his program.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

Being named Coach of the Year by the Los Angeles Chargers is a fitting tribute to Bailey鈥檚 enduring dedication and impact. It reflects not just the victories on the field but the countless hours spent mentoring, teaching, and building a program that Yorba Linda High School and its community can be proud of.

鈥淚鈥檝e coached in this community for over 30 years, and I鈥檝e had the best support you could possibly have,鈥 Bailey says. 鈥淚t has been a pleasure to work with the boosters and parents over the years. I couldn鈥檛 imagine doing it anywhere else.鈥

As Coach Jeff Bailey continues to lead, inspire, and win, the legacy he鈥檚 building at Yorba Linda High School will undoubtedly influence generations of student-athletes to come. For Bailey, the ultimate goal remains clear: to be known as a class act and a well-coached, hard-working team鈥攁 mission he has undoubtedly accomplished.
