Sam Shields
Shields鈥 rookie season (2010-11) established him as a reliable cornerback for the Green Bay Packers, contributing to their Super Bowl win that year.聽
He quickly emerged as one of the league鈥檚 top defensive backs, but his career came at a cost. Shields endured over his eight years in the NFL. He suffered headaches, lack of appetite and sleep issues, all of which he attributes to those concussions.
鈥淚t was three o鈥檆lock in the morning on some night鈥 I couldn鈥檛 sleep (because) it felt like my brain was cramping, or like it was ,鈥 Shields wrote in his Players Tribune article.聽
On the 鈥淪outh Beach Sessions鈥 podcast in 2022, Dan Le Batard asked Shields if he would still play in the NFL if he had
鈥淣o,鈥 Shields said. 鈥淚鈥檇 be going to school, trying to work for home improvement. I鈥檇 be trying to learn how to build a house.鈥澛
It was a long two years of concussion recovery for Sam Shields; everything he thought he knew about recovery was wrong!
