Milton Eagles boys XC team runs to the top as state champions
MILTON, Ga. — The Milton High School boys’ cross-country team clinched their second state title in the 5A classification, marking their first championship since 2017. The Lady Eagles also delivered a commendable performance, finishing 7th out of 24 schools. The boys and girls’ team comprised 142 runners this year!
In cross-country, each team’s score is determined by adding the finishing positions of its top five runners—the lower the total, the better the team’s performance. For instance, if a team’s runners finish 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 9th, their score would be 27 points. The team with the lowest score wins the meet. Additionally, the 6th and 7th runners, while not contributing directly to the team’s score, play a strategic role by potentially displacing opposing runners, thereby increasing competitors’ scores.

The Eagles secured their path to championship victory with a total of 61 points, significantly ahead of the favored Clark Central, which scored 119 points. This substantial lead was achieved by Milton’s top five runners all finishing within the top 26 out of 172 participants, effectively placing all their scoring runners ahead of Clark Central’s third finisher. Pope High School finished third with 164 points.

This championship win marks Milton’s second state championship in the cross-country team’s success which is a testament to their dedication, strategic racing, and the depth of talent across all grade levels.
