Q&A with Longmeadow all-state volleyball player Sydney Rome

LONGMEADOW, Mass. — When the subject is LHS women’s volleyball, one of the first names to pop up would be senior outside hitter, Sydney Rome. Sydney made several all everything postseason teams, and her achievements are many. However, this profile is more about her amazing character that trumps her many accolades as a result of her being a ridiculous outside hitter.

Town sources indicate how Sydney has always been concerned about her teammates well-being. Even from a young age Sydney was very helpful including volunteering and helping to run volleyball clinics to teach younger kids.

Early on during volleyball matches, she’d chase down the volleyball and pass it to every player before the serve.

We are all well aware how good Sydney is on the hardwood. It’s time to learn more about Sydney in this month’s Longmeadow Neighbors Profile of the Month.

Let’s get to know Sydney Rome:

How did volleyball become your favorite sport?

Sydney Rome: I got interested in volleyball when a bunch of girls on my gymnastics team started playing, so I joined in. The other sports I played growing up were soccer, lacrosse, and gymnastics. Volleyball won out because of my love of the sport from the start.

Describe the 2024 LHS volleyball team:

Rome: My volleyball team is the best. Each year I鈥檝e been on it, I鈥檝e grown closer and closer with my teammates…some of whom are even my best friends. Everyone on the team is so hard working and we play well together. I enjoy being a Lancer because not only do we play well together, we have lots of fun. My coaches throughout the years have been really supportive and tough on me, and that鈥檚 what has made me the player I am. Two of the coaches I am most grateful for are George Mulry and Pat Curry.

What do you do when you’re not playing volleyball?

Rome: Besides academics, I love getting involved with my class of 2025 doing fun activities together and it brings out my school spirit. LHS brings me many opportunities to laugh and have a good time. I enjoy hanging out with friends and family as well as my dogs, Daisy and Wynn.

Which colleges are you looking into attending?

Rome: The colleges I鈥檓 looking at are down south and in California. My field of study would be Business/Management for some schools and Communications for others. Volleyball is a potential possibility at some of the schools.

What do you hope to be doing after college?

Rome: I hope to have a challenging career that I enjoy, and spending time traveling the world.

Who are your volleyball role models?

Rome: Laney Choboy and Madisen Skinner.

How supportive is your family in everything you do in your life?

Rome: My family is very supportive. My parents go to all of my volleyball games no matter how far away they are. They鈥檝e been driving me to my sports for years before I could drive. They are always the loudest cheerers wherever we are and push me with my academics.

If you had a million dollars to donate to one charity, which charity would get it?

Rome: The Ronald McDonald House because of all the important work they do keeping families together.

Three things people don’t know about you.

Rome: My arms are double-jointed, I have a twin brother, and I love to travel.
