Orangeburg-Wilkinson Bruins football team is ready to enter the South Carolina 3A playoffs
ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The Orangeburg-Wilkinson (O-W) Bruins are embodying a true story of resilience and growth as they prepare for their first postseason home game in over a decade. Scheduled to host Aynor in the opening round of the Class 3A state playoffs this Friday, the Bruins are determined to flip the script on a history of early playoff exits.
This year marks a turning point under third-year head coach Chris Carter. After enduring his first two rebuilding seasons, the magic of the rebuilding coach has emerged for the third time. Carter stated, 鈥� Building takes time. There are so many moving parts when you come into various situations, many of which remain unspoken, but in today鈥檚 microwave society, everybody wants it now. Winning a game a coach can do, but building a culture takes a community rolling up their sleeves and putting some muscle behind the words.鈥� The Bruins finished the regular season with a 7鈥�3 record 鈥� their best since 2016. While the team ended with a difficult loss to Oceanside Collegiate in the 3A region championship game, Coach Carter sees the bigger picture.
鈥淚 think our guys have bounced back,鈥� Carter stated. 鈥淲hen bad things happen, you keep moving forward. At the beginning of the season, I told our guys to block out the noise no one really knows who you are. Nobody can write our story. They can try to predict, but God has the final say. We have home-field advantage in the first round and are excited to get back on the field.鈥�
The Bruins鈥� playoff history has been challenging, with only one second-round appearance since 1996 and a 1鈥�21 postseason record during that time. Carter himself experienced a rough start in his first two seasons, including lopsided playoff losses. Yet, through perseverance, the program has undergone a huge transformation.
