Georgia has already clinched a spot in the SEC championship game for the 12th time in program history, but Saturday鈥檚 game against rival Georgia Tech will be important to maintain its College Football Playoff status. A win on Saturday and next weekend in Atlanta could also give the Bulldogs a chance of earning one of the top playoff seeds.
The Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs have been playing since 1893 and have faced off annually since 1925. Georgia has controlled the series with a 71-41-5 record and has won 19 of the last 22 matchups, with Georgia Tech鈥檚 last victory coming by one point in Athens in 2016.
Georgia Tech will attempt to replicate that on Friday night but is a sizable underdog at 7-4 overall. The Yellow Jackets have some nice wins this year though, including beating a ranked Florida State team to open the season and upsetting No. 4 Miami just a couple of weeks ago. Georgia Tech ranks in the top 50 in the country in both total offense and total defense. Keeping up on the scoreboard with Georgia will be important and could come down to how freshman quarterback Aaron Philo handles the atmosphere in Athens if he starts over Haynes King.
Meanwhile, Georgia has losses at Alabama and at Ole Miss this season but has earned wins over two top-10 teams: Texas and Tennessee. The Bulldogs could see the Longhorns again in Atlanta but can鈥檛 overlook a scrappy Georgia Tech squad. Georgia will likely attack the Yellow Jackets through the air with a top-10 passing unit in the country behind Carson Beck, while the Bulldogs鈥� 15th-ranked total defense could also lead them to their seventh straight victory in this rivalry.
