Addison “Addy” Miller makes history at Hoover HS
CANTON, Ohio — North Canton Hoover High athlete Addison “Addy” Miller earned First Team honors at the Federal League Cross Country Championships on October 14th. Her first-place finish not only secured a win for her team but also etched her name in Hoover’s history. With her remarkable time, Addy now holds one of the top 15 fastest times in the school’s record books.
At 17 and in her senior year, Addy has been a standout runner for Hoover’s cross country and track teams, entering her third year with the program. Her perseverance and dedication brought her to the accomplishment she earned on the course. “My personal goals with cross country focus on striving to beat personal records and develop mental resilience, ”Addy shares. The goals have deepened her love and respect for the sport.

The pressure she places on herself can lead to anxiety, but she tackles it head-on with positive self-talk and a reminder that her hard work will pay off. Addy credits a piece of advice from an official during a meet—“Remember to always smile while racing!”—for helping her stay calm and centered during races. “Smiling helps me relax and focus on the love I have for this sport,” she says.
What makes cross country special for Addy goes beyond competition. “Cross country feels like home,” she explains. The combination of individual achievement and team dynamics, along with the sense of community, is what keeps her motivated. “It’s the bond with my teammates during training and races that make the tough workouts worth it,” she says. For Addy, it’s the journey of self-discovery and discipline that she cherishes most, rather than just the thrill of crossing the finish line.
Her pre-race routine is a carefully crafted ritual. Addy warms up by stretching or jogging and gets into the zone with her pre-race playlist. Then, just before the race, she and her teammates huddle up, do their cheer, and share words of motivation to help each other focus on personal goals for the race ahead.
When she’s not running, Addy enjoys downtime like any other teenager. “I love staying in my PJs all day and cuddling with my two cats and dog,” she says, showing the balance between her competitive spirit and her more relaxed side.

Through cross country, Addy has gained more than just athletic skills—it has shaped her into a better person. “Being part of a team has taught me so much about supporting others and experiencing joy from their success,” she reflects. Whether it’s accepting feedback, growing from both victories and defeats or learning the importance of teamwork, these lessons will stay with her long after her high school career ends.
Addy’s coach often reminds the team to “embrace the suck”—a phrase that resonates deeply with her. “It means accepting the discomfort and challenges that come with training and racing,” she explains. This mindset has helped Addy build resilience, pushing past the tough moments to become a better runner and person.
Of course, there have been learning moments along the way. Addy admits that she has sometimes let excitement and adrenaline get the best of her, causing her to start races too fast. “That taught me the importance of pacing and race strategy,” she says. Now, she focuses on finding a sustainable rhythm from the start, ensuring she finishes strong.
As Addison Miller closes out her senior year, her record-breaking achievements, mental toughness, and passion for cross country leave a lasting legacy at Hoover High. She’s not only one of the fastest runners in the school’s history but also an athlete who has embraced every challenge and used the sport to grow in all aspects of life.
