New Hanover boys basketball: A decade of dominance in North Carolina

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Over the years, the New Hanover High School (NHHS) men’s basketball team has emerged as a powerhouse in North Carolina high school athletics, solidifying its place among the elite programs in the state. With multiple state championships, consistent playoff appearances, and a roster of standout players, NHHS has become synonymous with excellence on the basketball court.

A Tradition of Winning

The Wildcats of New Hanover High School (NHHHS) in Wilmington have built a basketball dynasty that rivals the best in North Carolina. Overall, they have recorded 14 North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Basketball State Championships! In 2024, they finished the season with a 32-1 record, the best in program history! However, they lost to North Mecklenburg in the 4A state championship game.

The program’s success is the product of a strong coaching staff, talented athletes, and a community that supports its team with unwavering passion. Current Head Coach Kirk Angel’s leadership has guided the team, and his disciplined approach, combined with his emphasis on teamwork, fundamentals, and defense, has transformed NHHS into a well-oiled machine. Under his leadership, New Hanover has become known for its fast-paced, high-energy style of play that overwhelms opponents on both ends of the floor.

Player Development and Standout Talent

The success of the basketball program goes beyond its team accomplishments—it has also served as a breeding ground for individual talent. Over the past decade, several Wildcats players have gone on to have stellar careers at the collegiate level, with a few making their mark in professional leagues. NHHS’s focus on player development, both on and off the court, has been a key factor in its sustained success. The coaching staff emphasizes not just winning, but instilling values such as discipline, perseverance, and teamwork in their players. Many Wildcats alumni have spoken about how their time at NHHS helped prepare them for the challenges of college basketball and life beyond sports.

Consistency in the Playoffs

What makes New Hanover’s achievements even more remarkable is the consistency with which they’ve competed at a high level. In a decade where many programs have struggled to maintain success year over year, the Wildcats have consistently made deep runs in the playoffs, often coming up against the top-ranked teams in the state. Between 2013 and 2024, NHHS has advanced to the NCHSAA state playoffs nearly every year, with multiple appearances in the state finals and semifinals. Their ability to remain competitive speaks to the strength of the program’s foundation. The Wildcats’ defensive philosophy, which has become the hallmark of their play, has made defense the cornerstone of their success.

A Culture of Community Support

NHHS basketball has had incredible support from the Wilmington community. Games have become community events, with packed stands, local business sponsors, and alumni returning to cheer on the next generation of Wildcats. This close-knit community has played an important role in creating an environment where student-athletes can thrive. The sense of pride that comes with wearing the Wildcats uniform is palpable, and the team’s success is seen as a reflection of the hard work, resilience, and spirit of the New Hanover County. Also, the team’s involvement in community service and local outreach programs has further strengthened the bond between the basketball program and its supporters. From youth basketball camps to charity events, the Wildcats have made giving back a core component of their mission, creating a legacy that extends beyond the hardwood.

The Future of New Hanover Basketball

With a solid coaching staff, a strong feeder program, and a culture built on hard work and excellence, NHHS is poised to build on its already impressive legacy. The program’s commitment to developing young talent and maintaining high standards both on and off the court suggests that the next decade could be just as successful as the last. With rising stars already making their mark on the JV and varsity teams, the future of Wildcats basketball is bright, and fans can expect more championship banners to hang in Brogden Hall in the years to come. The Wildcats are not just a basketball team—they are a symbol of pride and perseverance for their school and community.
