Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Complex opens year-round Pickleball Center

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — A cornerstone of Steamboat Springs鈥 portfolio of recreational sports offerings is the Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Complex. That foundation grew even more substantial in 2024 with the opening of the Complex鈥檚 state-of-the-art, 35,000 sq. ft., year-round Pickleball Center. The addition of 12 cushioned indoor, year-round pickleball courts, eight outdoor pickleball courts, and twelve indoor/outdoor tennis courts make the Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Complex the largest facility of its kind in the Rocky Mountains.

The Steamboat Tennis & Pickleball Complex broke ground on the Pickleball Center in September 2023 after two phases of capital campaign fundraising efforts, known as the Expansion Project.

Phase I of the Expansion Project began in 2022 with a $6M investment resulting in four brand new outdoor tennis courts and eight pickleball courts- all designed with post-tension construction and gel-coated for durability and playing comfort, as well as architectural design and site preparation for building the Pickleball Center.

Phase II of the Complex鈥檚 Expansion Project kicked off in September 2023, with the ground-breaking of the energy-efficient steel Pickleball Center and the expansion of the parking lot, increasing the number of parking spaces by 28. In total, the Complex has privately raised $7.6M out of the $12.5M total investment needed to complete the initial Expansion Project, with the rest funded by a $5M loan.

鈥淭o witness the completion of the Pickleball Center at the Steamboat Tennis & Pickleball Complex is an honor of the highest caliber,鈥 said Jayson Harris, Director of Pickleball, Steamboat Tennis & Pickleball Complex. 鈥淣ot only will this facility provide year-round recreation for local and visiting Pickleball and Tennis enthusiasts, but the amount of support from the community to have built this facility is truly remarkable.鈥

The Steamboat Springs Tennis and Pickleball Complex has served the community for over 30 years, winning several national USTA and industry awards for the quality of its facilities, programs, coaching, and customer service. The Steamboat High School boys鈥 and girls鈥 tennis teams call the facility home, and we partner with multiple Steamboat nonprofits, including STARS and Boys and Girls Club, and schools throughout the region.

Now that the first initiative of the organization鈥檚 capital campaign, the Expansion Project, is complete. Courting Love, the second capital campaign initiative, is underway to rejuvenate the Tennis Center, which needs a new exterior membrane, HVAC system, resurfaced courts, and more.

鈥淭he Tennis Center鈥檚 membrane has lasted well past its 10-year expected life, and a recent inspection revealed that the insulation has failed in many areas,鈥 said Meg Tulley, Executive Director, STPC. 鈥淭he HVAC system is antiquated and highly energy inefficient, and the lighting needs to be improved. While the City of Steamboat has graciously donated $500,000 to help cover these expenses, over $2.5M+ will need to come from donations and grants. We will need the help of the Steamboat Community to restore the beloved Tennis Center to its original glory.鈥

The Pickleball Center features 12 cushioned indoor courts, a pro shop, a community room, a dedicated mezzanine level for tournament viewing and entertainment, and more.

Operated by the nonprofit Court Sports 4 Life (CS4L), including eight full-time staff, the Complex鈥檚 mission is to provide quality recreation for locals and visitors, leading to improved mental and physical health, an increased sense of community, and lots of fun.
