Ranking the top 10 Utah Utes football players of all time
1. Eric Weddle, DB (2003-06)
Before Weddle could excel at Utah, he needed someone to vouch for him.
In an interview with the Deseret News, Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham admitted he was confused as to why Weddle hadn’t been attracting more programs during his recruitment. Only New Mexico State and Colorado State were truly interested, Whittingham recalled.
He convinced then-head coach Urban Meyer to take a chance, one that paid off as Weddle collected a pair of Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year awards. He was a consensus All-American in 2006.
In all, Weddle totaled 143 tackles, 18 interceptions, and 10 touchdowns as a collegian.
