Milton football captures a top-25 victory
MILTON, Ga. — On Friday, Aug. 20, the Milton High School Eagles traveled to Plantation, Fla., to take on the American Heritage Patriots in a highly anticipated, top-25 varsity football matchup.
Milton edged out American Heritage 37-28 behind the stellar play of Luke Nickel, class of 2025 quarterback and University of Miami (FL) commit, who passed for 249 yards and two touchdowns. He also received help from the ground game, as Eastern Kentucky commit TJ Lester ran wild for 147 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns.
On the first drive, American Heritage drove the ball down for a field goal. However, Milton responded quickly, with Nickel orchestrating a 10-play, 82-yard drive that resulted in a Milton touchdown on a 1-yard run from running back TJ Lester.
The story of the first half for Milton was bend, but don鈥檛 break. They allowed a blocked punt and on American Heritage鈥檚 first three drives, they reached the redzone. Milton didn鈥檛 allow a touchdown though, and American Heritage was forced to settle for three field goals from kicker Gavin Harvey to take a 9-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Offensive fireworks soon prevailed. Milton drove down and took a 13-9 lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Nickel to class of 2025 wide receiver Tristen Payne, who twisted his body for a tiptoe grab. American Heritage responded with an eight-play, 60-yard drive headed by class of 2026 quarterback and University of Texas commit Dia Bell. Milton got last licks before the first half, as Lester rushed for an 8-yard touchdown with less than a minute remaining to retake the lead at 20-16 heading into halftime.
The momentum continued into the second half for Milton. Payne received the kickoff and took it 48 yards to the American Heritage 44-yard line to give Milton its second drive of the game to start in American Heritage territory. Nickel led a quick drive down the field that was capped off on a 1-yard wildcat touchdown run by Ethan Barbour, a 5-star senior recruit who is heading to the University of Georgia next year. This pushed the score to 27-16 for Milton.
American Heritage responded on the very next drive. It only took one play for them to get back within one score courtesy of class of 2025 running back Byron Louis. His 68-yard touchdown run put the Patriots within five points of the Eagles. American Heritage failed to convert on the two-point conversion attempt, so the score remained 27-22.
Milton regained possession and went on a drive that spanned almost the rest of the third quarter. They capped it off with a 23-yard field goal by Alex Nover.
Yet again, the Patriots responded. After intercepting Barbour on a trick play gone wrong, Dia Bell led American Heritage on an eight-play, 55-yard drive that included a 4th down conversion to keep the drive alive. At 30-28, the Patriots needed to go for two to tie the game. Milton stood up a run by Bell to keep the lead. All Milton needed was a few first downs to ice the game.
But Milton did one better. On third down, Nickel dropped back and hit Barbour for a 71-yard touchdown pass. This iced the game for Milton, and American Heritage could not find its way back in. Milton won 37-28.
It was a stellar performance in what is expected to be a show-stopping season for Milton football. Currently ranked No. 2 in the nation, all eyes are on Milton to see if they can repeat their state championship title.
